Basin Transit Transportation District Fixed Route Rules and Policies

Basin Transit Service Fixed Route Mobility Devices Policy

Are there specific requirements for my wheelchair, scooter, or other assistive equipment?

In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and U.S. Department of Transportation regulations, Basin Transit Service will transport any mobility device and its user, provided the device can be safely boarded and secured using the equipment available on the assigned vehicle.

  • Basin Transit Service does not impose fixed size or weight limits. Instead, accommodation depends on the manufacturer’s design limits of each lift or ramp and the available securement space inside the vehicle.
  • Mobility devices will be transported as long as they can be boarded and secured without creating an unsafe condition or exceeding the equipment’s rated capacity.
  • Because Basin Transit Service operates a mixed fleet with varying vehicle and lift capacities, some mobility devices may not fit on all vehicles. In such cases, staff will make every reasonable effort to assign a vehicle that can safely accommodate the device.
  • Riders are encouraged to share information about the dimensions and weight of their mobility device (including user) when scheduling trips to help ensure the most appropriate vehicle is assigned.
  • Reasonable Modification: Riders may request reasonable modifications to policies or practices to ensure equal access to service. Requests will be considered individually and granted unless they create a direct threat to safety, fundamentally alter the service, or are not operationally feasible.

Basin Transit Transportation District Policies

Passenger Behavior

All passengers are expected to behave in a safe and respectful manner while riding Basin Lift vehicles and while interacting with other passengers or Basin Lift employees.

The following conduct will not be tolerated if it creates a safety hazard or serious disturbance to others:

  • Fighting or threatening behavior
  • Throwing objects
  • Pushing or physical aggression
  • Spitting
  • Using abusive, threatening, or profane language directed at others
  • Engaging in behavior that creates unsafe conditions on the vehicle

Important: Some behaviors may be related to a person’s disability. Basin Transit will make reasonable modifications to policies to ensure individuals with disabilities are not unfairly excluded from service. Passengers may only be suspended from service if their conduct results in a direct threat to safety or causes serious, repeated disruptions that cannot be reasonably accommodated.

Forbidden Objects on Fixed Route Vehicles

The following items are not permitted on any Basin Lift vehicle at any time:

  • Firearms or other weapons of any type
  • Hazardous chemicals or explosives
  • Flammable liquids or acids
  • Materials that may present a serious safety hazard to others or cause damage to vehicle

Passengers may not consume food or beverages on board a Fixed Route Vehicle, except as required for a medical reason (for example, a rider with diabetes needing to manage blood sugar) or due to a disability. Sealed beverages or medical liquids may be brought on board if stored safely to prevent spills.

Suspension for Policy Violations

Passengers who engage in conduct that presents a direct threat to health or safety, or who create serious, repeated service disruptions, may be subject to suspension from service.

Before any suspension takes effect, Basin Transit Service will provide:

  1. Written notice of the proposed suspension, including the reason.
  2. An opportunity to be heard (the rider may explain their side of the issue).
  3. An appeal process with review by the General Manager or designee, as required by ADA regulations.
  4. Appeal process is located under the ADA Tab.
